The Eschborn-Frankfurt 2024 cycling classic is history. With a total of 10,000 participants, a new record number of participants was achieved. The classic route led over 103 km through Frankfurt and the Taunus. A total of 1,550 meters of altitude had to be climbed.
In my own experiment, I only ate a baguette with jam and drank a double espresso for breakfast. That was definitely not quite right. A bottle of 500ml of carbohydrate drink would have been better, so that I was well supplied for the start. I took the WETTKAMPF product with me on the trip in three bottles, each with 90g of carbohydrates in 750ml of water. However, I only drank 2 bottles of these, as it was not quite as warm in the Taunus as expected. So during the race I consumed around 60g of carbohydrates per hour, which corresponds to 720 kcal.
According to the analysis, I consumed around 2,400 kcal, which is exactly the amount that my glycogen stores in my liver and muscle tissue can provide. This means that I did not suffer from an energy deficiency in terms of carbohydrates. This is certainly relatively optimal.
My average wattage was about 236W (NP 235W) for 3 hours 10 minutes over 103km with an average HR of 151bpm.
It is therefore important to ensure you are sufficiently supplied with energy even during a race or a bike ride lasting over 3 hours, otherwise the glycogen stores will be depleted, which can lead to a drop in performance and concentration after 2 hours.
Best regards, Ingolf
