Are you ready for Kona? I myself have had the pleasure and challenge of starting and finishing in Kona three times. Kona is truly a magical place and the mecca of the sport for triathletes. A lot has changed in recent years. The race and the athletes have become much more professional. This applies to dealing with the special conditions on the Big Island and also with the necessary sports nutrition. The special feature lies in particular in the local circumstances and conditions.
- Swimming in salt water (without wetsuit)
- On the bike with headwind
- Running in extreme heat and humidity
All three are special conditions that only a few athletes can take into account in their regular training regime. This means being well prepared for them. The heat and humidity on the running track in particular deserve special attention. Here, fluid and sodium intake play a special role, as they determine how successful the run will be.
With our WETTKAMPF product you have a meal that already contains 90g of carbohydrates and 2.1g of sodium chloride per unit, which corresponds to 816mg of sodium. Comparable brands have significantly lower amounts of sodium (between 80mg and 600mg). With such products it is recommended to add salt, especially in Kona.
Sodium is particularly important for transporting glucose/fructose into the bloodstream and also for enabling water absorption.
Good luck at the World Championship!
