Fructose and possible intolerance

Fructose in der Sporternährung

Fructose is a monosaccharide like glucose. Fructose became the focus of sports nutrition when it was discovered that fructose uses a different transporter than glucose. The transporter for glucose is insulin-dependent and limited to around 80g to 90g of carbohydrates per hour.

Fructose, on the other hand, is transported to the liver via an insulin-independent transporter and then into the bloodstream. This means that up to 120g of carbohydrates can be absorbed per hour in a maximum combination of glucose:fructose (1:0.8).

But what should you do if you have fructose intolerance?

Fructose intolerance is usually diagnosed when bloating, diarrhea, stomach pain and nausea occur due to fructose in high concentrations (fruits, etc.). This happens when fructose cannot be absorbed in the small intestine, but instead reaches the large intestine and is used by bacteria to generate energy. This causes gases and fatty acids to form, which trigger the typical symptoms of fructose malabsorption. It is therefore not always a case of fructose intolerance. Article

Therefore, breath should be used to diagnose fructose intolerance or fructose malabsorption to ensure safety.

The good news is that fructose malabsorption can be avoided with the right combination of glucose:fructose. We have often heard from athletes that they consider themselves to be fructose intolerant and yet tolerate our products very well or without symptoms. This is because it is not only fructose that is absorbed, as is often the case with excessive consumption of fruit. Even household sugar contains a glucose:fructose ratio of 1:1, which is simply too much fructose in terms of fructose under stress.

Our product BELASTUNG contains a gentle glucose:fructose ratio of 2:1 and therefore less fructose. However, this also means that only a maximum of 100g of carbohydrates can be absorbed per hour.

Our WETTKAMPF product, on the other hand, offers a maximum intake of carbohydrates with a glucose:fructose ratio of 1:0.8 with a maximum of 120g of carbohydrates per hour. This is why this product is the first choice for all competition-oriented activities.
